Why Briarville
Why Briarville: A Legacy of Community and History
Nestled at the south-central entrance of Madison, Tennessee, The Briarville Apartments stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Bates family.
For over 150 years, this land belonged to the Bates family, one of the few African American farming families to own such a vast expanse of land. The story of Briarville begins with Randall Bates, whose ancestors cultivated this land for generations.
The Bates family’s journey from enslavement to landownership reflects the resilience and strength that define The Briarville’s identity. Bart Bates, the original owner, received this land as a gift following the abolition of slavery, marking the beginning of a thriving community that would endure for decades to come.

From Past to Present: Embracing Change with Purpose
Today, Briarville continues to honor its heritage by offering affordable housing to all.
The seven buildings that comprise The Briarville Apartments are named after the seven heads of the Bates family, serving as a tribute to their enduring legacy.
LDG’s commitment to providing quality housing reflects the values instilled by the Bates family, ensuring that everyone has a place to call home in our community.
The Mural: A Tribute to Heritage
Central to The Briarville’s identity is the striking mural created by local artist Omari Booker, provided through gifts by The LDG Foundation, Amazon Community Fund, Historic Nashville Foundation, and the Memorial Foundation, that adorns our property, depicting the Bates family and their journey through history 1863-2023.
This artwork serves as a visual reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by those who came before us, inspiring us to continue their legacy of resilience and unity.
A Commitment to Local Art & Culture
Inside the clubhouse at The Briarville, you will find seventeen additional works of original art created by students, faculty, and graduates of our neighbor Nossi College of Art & Design.
Each work from these six artists portrays the cultural history of Madison with works celebrating the musical heritage and the historic landmarks in this Northeast part of Nashville, TN.
